Biography

Eighth Blackbird is an American contemporary classical music sextet founded in 1996 at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music. Named after a stanza from Wallace Stevens' poem Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Blackbird, the ensemble won the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition that same year. Their debut album, Forbidden Love (2003), was followed by albums including Thirteen Ways (2003) and Strange Imaginary Animals (2006). The group has won six Grammy Awards for recordings, including Strange Imaginary Animals and Lonely Motel: Music from Slide (2009). Other albums include Meanwhile (2011) and Filament (2015). Eighth Blackbird has collaborated with composers such as Steve Reich and Stephen Hartke.
