Biography

Angela Maria Diniz Gonsalves (December 5, 1949), better known by her stage name Angela Ro Ro, is a Brazilian singer-songwriter and pianist. Born in the city of Rio de Janeiro, she began taking classical piano lessons at the age of 5, inspired by her musical heroes Elis Regina, Maysa, Jacques Brel, and Ella Fitzgerald. After spending a few years in exile in Europe, she returned to Brazil and made her official recording debut with an eponymous LP released in 1979 via Polygram, which has since become one of the quintessential MPB albums thanks to songs like "Gota de Sangue," "Balada da Arrasada," "Agito e Uso," "Tola Foi Você," and "Amor, Meu Grande Amor." A year later, Angela Ro Ro released the album Só Nos Resta Viver, one of the best-selling albums of her career. In 1981, she returned with the aptly-titled Escândalo!, released after a much-publicized dispute with her then-partner, the singer Zizi Possi. She disappeared from the public eye during most of the 1990s and returned in 2000 with the album Acertei no Milênio, followed by the critically acclaimed Compasso in 2006 and Selvagem in 2017.
