Biography

Eduard Alexander van Beinum, born September 3, 1900, was a Dutch conductor who became one of the leading figures of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. Born into a musical family in Arnhem, he studied violin and piano before turning to conducting, beginning his career in Zutphen in 1925 and later leading the Haarlem Orchestra Association. He joined the Concertgebouw Orchestra as second conductor in 1931 and succeeded Willem Mengelberg as chief conductor after World War II. Renowned for his collaborative leadership, Van Beinum championed the works of Gustav Mahler, Anton Bruckner, French composers, and contemporary Dutch music while restoring repertoire banned during the Nazi occupation. He also served as principal conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra (1947–1950) and chief conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. He died from a heart attack during a rehearsal in 1959.
