The Eastman Wind Ensemble was founded in 1952 at the Eastman School of Music by conductor Frederick Fennell. The ensemble redefined wind band music by featuring one player per part as specified by composers and premiered over 150 works, including pieces by Bernard Rands and Joseph Schwantner. Notable recordings from Fennell's period include works by Hindemith, Schoenberg, and Stravinsky (Mercury Living Presence, 1957). Under Donald Hunsbergerâs direction from 1965 to 2001, the ensemble gained international prominence through tours and recordings, including Carnaval with Wynton Marsalis (CBS Masterworks, 1987). Mark Scatterday has led the group since 2002, continuing its legacy with performances at Carnegie Hall and releases such as Manhattan Music (Opening Day Records, 2008) and Lightning Air (New Focus, 2022).
