Biography

Charles William Butterfield, born on January 14, 1917 in Middletown, Ohio, was an American jazz bandleader, trumpeter, flugelhornist, and cornetist. He gained attention playing with Bob Crosby from 1937 to 1940 and performed a notable trumpet solo on "What's New?". Butterfield also collaborated with Artie Shaw, Les Brown, and Benny Goodman. In 1940, he performed a memorable trumpet solo on "Star Dust" with Artie Shaw's orchestra. During his service in the U.S. armed forces from 1943 to 1947, he led his own orchestra. Notable recordings include "Moonlight In Vermont" (1956) and collaborations with Ray Conniff on Conniff Meets Butterfield (1959). He was a member of the World's Greatest Jazz Band from the late 1960s until his death on March 18, 1988, in North Palm Beach, Florida.
