Biography
The Dungeon Family was an Atlanta-based Southern hip-hop collective founded around producer Rico Wade's basement recording studio in East Point, Georgia, known as "The Dungeon." The collective served as the creative hub for many influential artists and producers, including the production trio Organized NoizeâRico Wade, Ray Murray, and Sleepy Brownâwhose work helped shape the sound of groups such as Outkast, Goodie Mob, and TLC. Blending hip-hop with strong funk and soul influences, the Dungeon Family played a key role in the emergence of Atlanta as a major center of rap music. The collective released its only group album, Even in Darkness, through Arista Records in 2001, featuring contributions from many of its members. Following the closure of Arista Records in 2011, the collective left its parent label, Sony Music. Wade, widely regarded as a key figure in Atlanta hip-hop, died on April 13, 2024.
