Biography
Dread Zeppelin was formed in 1989 in Sierraâ¯Madre, California, by bassist Gary Putman, drummer Curt Lichter, and guitarist Joseph "Severs" Ramsey, all former members of The Prime Movers. The trio recruited Lasâ¯Vegas Elvis impersonator Greg Tortell and percussionist Bryant Fernandez to create a reggaeârock parody of Ledâ¯Zeppelin, releasing the novelty single "Immigrant Song" / "Hey Hey What Can I Do" on Birdcage Records in 1989. In 1990 the group signed with I.R.S. Records and issued the debut album UnâLedâEd, followed by 5,000,000⯠Tortelvis⯠Fans⯠Canât⯠Be⯠Wrong in 1991. Subsequent releases included Itâs Not Unusual (1992), Hot & Spicy Beanburger (1993), and No Quarter Pounder (1995). After a brief period with Imago and later Cleopatra Records, the band released Deâjahâ¯Voodoo (1999) and SpamâBake (1998) through Cash Cow. Dread Zeppelin toured extensively, performing at venues worldwide and appearing in the film National Lampoonâs Last Resort (1994). The group disbanded in 2016 following their final performance on April⯠2, 2016.
