Biography

Richard Donald Barnes, known as Don Barnes, was born on December 3, 1952, in Jacksonville, Florida. He is an American rock vocalist and guitarist and one of the founding members of the Southern rock band 38 Special. Barnes co-founded 38 Special in 1974 with Donnie Van Zant. The band's breakthrough came with their album Special Forces (1982), which was later certified platinum. Barnes contributed as a vocalist and guitarist on albums such as Tour de Force (1983) and Strength in Numbers (1986). He left the group in 1987, and his final hit with them was the single “Back to Paradise,” before being replaced by Max Carl. Barnes returned to 38 Special in 1992 and has remained with them ever since. The band continued releasing albums, including Bone Against Steel (1991) and Resolution (1997).
