Joseph Gajard, born on June 25, 1885, in Sonzay, was a French Benedictine monk, choir conductor, and musicologist. He entered the petit séminaire de Tours at age 12 and later joined the grand séminaire, where he became master of chapel and was initiated into Gregorian chant. In 1909, Gajard was ordained as a priest and decided to become a monk at the Abbey Saint-Pierre de Solesmes. He pronounced his simple vows in 1911 and began working under Dom Mocquereau at the Paléographie musicale workshop. By September 1914, he succeeded Mocquereau as choir conductor of the community, a role he held until 1970. He devoted himself to writing the Antiphonale monasticum (1934). He founded the Schola Saint-Grégoire in 1938 and promoted Gregorian chant through conferences, courses, and publications until his death on April 25, 1972.
