Robert Earl Davis, Jr., known by his stage name DJ Screw, was born on July 20, 1971, in Smithville, Texas. He began his career as a DJ at age 12 in 1983 and started creating slowed-down mixes in 1990, which became his signature style. In late 1991 and early 1992, he produced these mixes for friends and later sold them commercially. Davis formed the Screwed Up Click (S.U.C.), a collective of Houston MCs including Lil KeKe, Big Hawk, and Fat Pat. He later signed with Russell Washington's BigTyme Recordz in the mid-1990s and opened Screwed Up Records and Tapes on 7717 Cullen Blvd in Houston, TX. DJ Screw died on November 16, 2000, from a codeine overdose. His influence extended beyond Houston, impacting artists such as Oneohtrix Point Never and Balam Acab. Texas governor Rick Perry honored him as an official 'Texas Music Pioneer' in 2005. His discography includes albums like 3 'n the Mornin': Part One (1994) and All Work No Play Vol. I (1999), as well as posthumous releases The Legend (2001) and Soldiers United for Cash (2002).
