Biography
Jean-Baptiste Kabasele Yampanya wa ba Mulanga, known as Pepé Kallé, was born on November 30, 1951 in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo. He started his musical career singing at a church choir and later joined the orchestra Bamboula in 1969. His breakthrough came when he joined Verkys' group Vévé and its satellite formation Lipwa Lipwa. In 1972, Kallé formed Empire Bakuba with Dilu Dilumoma and Papy Tex Matolu. The group's success began with "Nazoki" in 1973, leading to extensive tours across Africa from 1975 to 1977. Empire Bakuba introduced the dance style masasi calculé and later adopted extravagant performances known as the "Bakuba Show." Kallé's solo career took off with albums like Zouke Zouke (1986) and "Moyibi" (1988), which gained him popularity in the Caribbean. His 1985 song "Article 15, beta libanga" became a significant hit, addressing social issues. Kallé passed away on November 28, 1998.
