Diego Urcola, born on November 5, 1965 in Buenos Aires, Argentina, is a trumpeter and composer known for his contributions to modern jazz. He began formal training at age nine and studied at the Conservatorio Nacional de Musica before moving to Boston to attend Berklee College of Music, graduating in 1990. Urcola then relocated to New York, earning a Master's from Queens College in 1997 and securing second place at the International Thelonious Monk Jazz Trumpet Competition. Urcola's career included collaborations with Slide Hampton, Dizzy Gillespie, Wynton Marsalis, and Paquito DâRivera. He joined the Paquito DâRivera Quintet in 1991 and worked regularly with the Caribbean Jazz Project starting in 2004. His album Soundances was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Latin Jazz Album in 2005, as was his production Viva in 2007. Urcola's discography includes albums such as Libertango, Appreciation, and Mates.
