Biography
Diamanda Galás, born in San Diego, California on 29â¯Augustâ¯1955, is an American musician and singer-songwriter known for her extended soprano technique. She began performing in the early 1970s with the jazz ensemble Black Music Infinity, and released her first solo record, The Litanies of Satan (1982), followed by Diamanda Galás (1982). In 1986, she launched the AIDS trilogy Masque of the Red Death, comprising The Divine Punishment (1986), Saint of the Pit (1986), and You Must Be Certain of the Devil (1988), which established her as a vocal avantâgarde figure. She also notably collaborated with John Paul Jones and contributed to the soundtrack of Naturalâ¯Bornâ¯Killers. After a period of independent releases in the 2000s, she founded Intravenal Sound Operations and issued All the Way (2017) and At Saint Thomas the Apostle Harlem (2017).
