Biography

DeVotchKa, formed in Denver in 1997, comprises Nick Urata (vocals, guitar, trumpet, theremin, bouzouki, piano), Tom Hagerman (violin, accordion, trombone, piano), Jeanie Schroder (sousaphone, upright bass, backing vocals), and Shawn King (drums, percussion, trumpet). The quartet first attracted attention playing in burlesque and punk venues before releasing their debut album SuperMelodrama (2000), followed by Triple X Tango (2002) and Una Volta (2003), all showcasing their cinematic folk-rock fusion. They broke through with How It Ends (2004), anchored by the title track featured in film trailers and trailers; that same year, their collaboration with composer Mychael Danna earned them a Grammy nomination for the Little Miss Sunshine soundtrack. The band continued to build momentum with A Mad & Faithful Telling (2008), which charted on Billboard’s Heatseekers, and 100 Lovers (2011), before performing with the Colorado Symphony on Live with the Colorado Symphony (2012). After a pause, they returned with This Night Falls Forever (2018) via Concord Records and have since upheld an active touring schedule—evidenced by appearances at JetLAG Festival in June 2025 and midsummer U.S. shows. Their 20th-anniversary remaster of How It Ends (2024) also reignited interest in their signature blend of indie rock and Eastern European folk.
