Decoder Ring, an Australian experimental electronic-rock crossover band, was formed in 2001 in Sydney by Tom Schutzinger, Geoff Towner, Pete Kelly, Kenny Davis Jr., and Matt Fitzgerald. Their debut EP Spooky Action at a Distance was released in 2002, followed by their self-titled album. In 2004, the band composed the soundtrack for the Australian film Somersault, which earned them an AFI Award for Best Original Music Score and an ARIA Award nomination. Geoff Towner departed in 2003 and was replaced by Ben Ely. Kenny Davis Jr. and Ben Ely left after recording Somersault. The band's third full-length album Fractions was released in 2005, accompanied by performances at major festivals including Homebake and Splendour in the Grass. In March 2006, they performed at the St Jerome's Laneway Festival in Sydney and embarked on a US tour. Tom Schutzinger departed from the band in 2009.
