Biography

Debout sur le Zinc is a French alternative chanson group formed in 1995 in Rambouillet by Simon Mimoun (vocals, violin, guitar), Olivier Sulpice (banjo, guitar, mandolin) and Romain Sassigneux (vocals, clarinet, guitar, saxophone), joined over the years by several musicians including Thomas Benoit (bass), Christophe Bastien (vocals, guitar) and Cédric "Zed" Ermolieff (drums). The group has made its mark on the French music scene with a blend of poetic chanson, rock, folk and traditional music with a klezmer or Celtic accent. Their eponymous debut album came out in 1999, followed by L'homme à Tue-Tête (2001) and Des Singes et des Moutons (2003), which confirmed their singular style. Les Promesses (2006), Récréations (2007), De Charybde en Scylla (2008), La Fuite en Avant (2011), Eldorado(s) (2015) and L'Importance de l'Hiver (2019) continue their exploration of lively, instrumental song, marked by sensitive, committed lyrics. The group remains active on stage, recognized for its collective energy and its attachment to a certain tradition of festive, poetic French chanson. Inscribed in the new French chanson of the 2000s, the group has also produced a recording for young people, Abécédaire en 26 Chansonnettes (2010), an album devoted to the songs of Boris Vian, Vian par Debout sur le Zinc (2019) and L'Abécédaire de Boris Vian et Lucienne Vernay (2023). In 2025, Mémoire Électrique is released.
