David McKee Barnes, born June 20, 1978, in South Carolina, is an American musician and songwriter based in Nashville. He began his music career while attending Middle Tennessee State University, initially writing songs for others before performing his own works. His breakthrough came with the independent release Brother, Bring The Sun in September 2004. Barnes signed to Razor & Tie Records in April 2008, releasing his major-label debut album Me and You and the World. His single "God Gave Me You" became a top 5 hit on the Contemporary Christian music chart in June 2010 and was later covered by Blake Shelton. Barnes has released several albums, including What We Want, What We Get (2010), Golden Days ( 2014), and Carry On, San Vicente (2016). He was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Country Song in 2012.
