Biography

Leola B. Henton, known professionally as Coot Grant, was born on June 17, 1893, in Birmingham, Alabama. She was an American classic female blues, country blues, and vaudeville singer and songwriter who began her career in vaudeville at age seven in Atlanta, Georgia. She toured internationally before marrying Isiah I. Grant in 1913. After his death in 1920, she married Wesley "Kid" Wilson, and they formed a popular duo performing in various shows. They recorded with notable artists such as Fletcher Henderson, Mezz Mezzrow, Sidney Bechet, and Louis Armstrong. Their collaborations included "Gimme a Pigfoot (And a Bottle of Beer)" and "Take Me for a Buggy Ride", both recorded by Bessie Smith. Coot Grant died on December 26, 1970. Her entire recorded work was issued in three volumes by Document Records in 1988, with compilation releases in 1998.
