Coaltar of the Deepers were formed in Tokyo in Mayâ¯1991. Their first release, the White EP (Decemberâ¯1991) on Strange Records, introduced the bandâs shoegaze sound, which they later expanded into death metal, techno and other styles. In Octoberâ¯1992, they issued Queenâs Park all you change on Stomly Records, followed a month later by Sinking Slowly, both of which helped the group gain early recognition. The debut fullâlength album The Visitors From Deepspace (Aprilâ¯1994) appeared on Victor Records, and after a brief hiatus, the band returned in 1997 with Cat EP on ZK Records. 1998 saw the release of Submerge, a mix of remixes, new tracks and rarities, and a bestâof collection titled The Breastroke. In 1999, Dog EP preceded the Englishâtitled album Come Over to the Deepend (Marchâ¯2000). The 2001 Robot EP led into the experimental No Thank You (Mayâ¯2001), followed by Newave (Februaryâ¯2002). 2007 produced the Tortoise EP and the album Yukari Telepath. Subsequent releases include Rabbit EP (Decemberâ¯2019). The band also provided voice work for the anime Paradise Kiss.
