Biography

Coaltar of the Deepers were formed in Tokyo in May 1991. Their first release, the White EP (December 1991) on Strange Records, introduced the band’s shoegaze sound, which they later expanded into death metal, techno and other styles. In October 1992, they issued Queen’s Park all you change on Stomly Records, followed a month later by Sinking Slowly, both of which helped the group gain early recognition. The debut full‑length album The Visitors From Deepspace (April 1994) appeared on Victor Records, and after a brief hiatus, the band returned in 1997 with Cat EP on ZK Records. 1998 saw the release of Submerge, a mix of remixes, new tracks and rarities, and a best‑of collection titled The Breastroke. In 1999, Dog EP preceded the English‑titled album Come Over to the Deepend (March 2000). The 2001 Robot EP led into the experimental No Thank You (May 2001), followed by Newave (February 2002). 2007 produced the Tortoise EP and the album Yukari Telepath. Subsequent releases include Rabbit EP (December 2019). The band also provided voice work for the anime Paradise Kiss.
