Cinerama was formed in England in 1998 by David Gedge, the frontman of The Wedding Present, and Sally Murrell, who contributed keyboards and vocals. The duo first attracted attention with the single "Kerry Kerry" released through Cooking Vinyl in 1998, which entered the UK Singles Chart at Number 71. Their debut studio album, Va Va Voom, followed on 29 June 1998 and established the groupâs signature blend of rock guitars with string and woodwind arrangements. In 2000, the band released Disco Volante and the compilation This Is Cinerama, the latter compiling earlier singles and EPs. The 2002 releases Live In Los Angeles and Torino expanded their live reputation, while Cinerama Holiday compiled live tracks and rarities. The 2003 John Peel Sessions : Season 2 showcased the bandâs evolving sound. After a period of sporadic activity, Cinerama returned with Valentina in 2015, a reârecorded album originally by The Wedding Present, and later reâreleased Va Va Voom 25 in December 2024 with fullâband reârecordings. Throughout its career, Cinerama performed alongside the evolving lineup of The Wedding Present, participated in festivals such as âAt the Edge ofâ¦â, and maintained a presence on the independent music scene without achieving major chart success but earning recognition within indie rock circles for its orchestral pop approach.
