Biography
At a time in the late 1980s to early '90s when sweaty grunge bands and hard-shredding metal acts dominated the music industry, Black Crowes came swaggering out of Georgia with '60s rock riffs and southern bar-room blues grooves. They stood out as retro throwbacks inspired by The Rolling Stones and The Faces, and they went on to top the US Album Charts and tour with Jimmy Page and The Who.
Propelled by the sibling rivalry of front man Chris and guitarist Rich Robinson, ego clashes and drug problems led to the band breaking up in 2002, but Chris bounced back with his debut solo album 'New Earth Mud'. As he promoted the record, it took on a more sun-kissed, psychedelic, jam band feel that recalled The Grateful Dead, and follow-up 'The Magnificent Distance' delved deeper into rootsy, free-spirited Americana. Black Crowes reformed between 2005 and 2013 and Robinson played shows with legendary bassist Phil Lesh and formed the Chris Robinson Brotherhood with guitarist Neal Casal. Typically vintage and bluesy in sound and style, their albums 'Big Moon Ritual' and 'Phosphorescent Heart' also dealt in laid back soul and funk licks and hazy, West Coast pop melodies.
