Biography
Accompanying the emergence of nu metal, Chevelle was formed in 1995 in Grayslake, Illinois, by brothers Pete Loeffler (vocals, guitar), Sam Loeffler (drums) and Joe Loeffler (bass). A first demo, The Blue Album, is released in 1998. The band then recorded their debut album, Point #1, with producer Steve Albini in 1999. Its successor, Wonder What's Next, is released in 2002, and is more oriented towards alternative metal. It peaked at number 14 on the Billboard charts with the single "Closure ", which took the top spot on the specialist Mainstream Rock Charts. This was followed by Live from the Road, a live recording of the band's performance at the 2003 Ozzfest festival. This Type of Thinking (Could Do Us In) followed in 2004, finishing eighth in the U.S. and marking the end of the collaboration with Joe Loeffler. Vena Sera was released in 2006 and reached #12 on the Billboard charts, but the band's best performance came with Sci-Fi Crimes, which peaked at #6 in 2009. After a new studio album, Hats Off to the Bull, recorded with producer Joe Barresi, released in 2011, Chevelle released the compilation Stray Arrows: A Collection of Favorites in 2012. The band again relies on Joe Barresi for its seventh and eighth albums, La Gárgola, (2014) and The North Corridor (2016), marked by a more aggressive sound. The band returns to a more melodic sound on Niratias (2021), buoyed by the singles "Self Destructor", "Peach" and "Remember When". Preceded by the singles "Rabbit Hole (Cowards, Pt. 1)" and "Jim Jones (Cowards, Pt. 2)", the album Bright as Blasphemy (2025) is self-produced by the duo.
