Charlie Smalls (1943â1987) was an American musical theatre composer and songwriter from Queens, New York. A musical prodigy, Smalls attended the Juilliard School from 1954 to 1961 and later graduated from the High School of Performing Arts. Early in his career, he wrote the song âFrom Me to Youâ for Hugh Masekela's Next Album (1966) and the score for the film Drum (1976). Smalls wrote the music and lyrics for the 1975 Broadway musical The Wiz, an urbanized adaptation of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. The production earned him a Tony Award for Best Original Score in 1975 and a Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album in 1976. Smalls died in Belgium on August 27, 1987, due to a burst appendix. At the time of his death, he was developing the musical Miracles.
