Biography

Charlie & His Orchestra, a German band also known as the Templin band, was formed in 1940 under Nazi propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels. Led by singer Karl Schwedler ("Charlie"), the group performed jazz music with pro-German lyrics to counter American influences. Their first recordings, including "Ich hab' dich und du hast mich / Sing mit mir", were released in 1943. As an official Reichsministerium band, Charlie & His Orchestra made over 90 recordings between March 1941 and February 1943. Their music was broadcast on shortwave radio to the United Kingdom and the United States, distributed on 78 rpm records to POW camps and occupied countries. Post-World War II, the band reorganized under Fritz Brocksieper as Freddie Brocksieper and performed at US Armed Forces clubs in Stuttgart and Ludwigsburg.
