Biography

Charles & Eddie were a short-lived American soul and R&B duo from New York City who enjoyed great success in the US during the early 90s. Following a fortunate encounter on the New York City subway, Eddie Chacon and Charles Pettigrew quickly hit it off and started working on their studio debut, the critically and commercially acclaimed Duophonic (1992). Heavily inspired from 70s Northern soul, the album spawned the massive hit “Would I Lie to You?,” which topped the UK Singles Chart for two consecutive weeks and reached the top of the charts in countries like New Zealand, Germany, Austria, and Zimbabwe. Penned by Mike Leeson and Peter Vale, the song won three Ivor Novello Awards for Best Contemporary Song, Best Selling Song, and International Hit of the Year. Though not as successful as its predecessor, Chocolate Milk (1995) was still well received, spawning the singles “I'm Gonna Love You (24-7-365)” and “Jealousy,” which reached the Top 40 in countries like the UK and Austria. After the group’s breakup in 1997, Chacon moved on to a successful career as a songwriter and producer in Europe, and Pettigrew joined celebrated new wave act Tom Tom Club before succumbing to cancer in 2001.
