Drummer and percussionist Chad Taylor is also an American composer, improviser and teacher, recognized as one of the leading figures in contemporary avant-garde jazz. Born on March 19, 1973 in Tempe (Arizona) and trained in Chicago and New York, he made his mark on the creative scene in the 1990s with a deeply rhythmic, inventive style that is open to influences from all over the world. Co-founder, with cornetist Rob Mazurek, of the various Chicago Underground projects (Duo, Trio, Orchestra), he develops a hybrid approach blending free jazz, electronic music, acoustic textures and structural experimentation. Author of several albums as leader or co-leader and collaborator on numerous projects, he formed a quintet under his own name, made up of Bryan Rogers (tenor saxophone), Jonathan Finlayson (trumpet), Matt Engle (double bass) and Victor Vieira-Branco (vibraphone), which recorded the album Smoke Shifter, released in November 2025 on the Otherly Love label.
