Biography

Born in Buffalo, New York in 1983, James Brandon Lewis is a saxophonist and composer. He received his MFA (Master of Fine Arts) from the California Institute of the Arts. He fronts several ensembles and co-founded Heroes Are Gang Leaders, an award-winning music and poetry ensemble. His music blends jazz with other genres including experimental funk. James Brandon Lewis has received praise from critics and was voted Rising Star Tenor Saxophonist in Downbeat Magazine's 2020 Critic's Poll. His releases include Divine Travels (2014), Days of FreeMan (2015), Radiant Imprints with Chad Taylor (2018), An Unruly Manifesto (2019) and Live in Willisau with Chad Taylor (2020). After the release of Molecular (2020), James Brandon Lewis collaborated with Red Lily Quintet on 2021’s Jesup Wagon and 2023’s For Mahalia, with Love. Further solo albums include Eye of I (2023), Transfiguration (2024), and Apple Cores (2025). In 2024, he collaborated with jazz punk group The Messthetics on the album The Messthetics and James Brandon Lewis.
