Biography

It was thanks to "Lover Why ", their unstoppable slow song of an improbable length for the time (five minutes and thirty-four seconds), that the Marseilles pop-rock group Century shot to fame in 1985, topping the French Top 50 for almost two months and achieving almost as much success in Germany, Switzerland and Belgium. The band, led by keyboardist and singer Jean-Louis Milford, had been formed the year before, and in 1986 released their first album, And Soul It Goes. In addition to "Lover Why", the tracks "Jane" and "Gone With the Winner " had a respectable run, even if they failed to match the popularity of the former. In 1987, the second album Is It Red? was released, but the band's rise to prominence was halted by a scam. Numerous changes, brought about by discouragement on the part of some and weariness on the part of others, did not prevent Jean-Louis Milford from presiding over the recording of new demos, without however resulting in a new album. A new album was not forthcoming until 1992, with the release of Rumours of Yesterday, followed four years later by CENTURY IV. In the 2000s, the double album Timeless was released in relative obscurity.
