Carolyne Mas, born Carol Patricia Mas on October 20, 1955, in the United States, is a singer-songwriter known for her contributions pop music. She emerged from the Greenwich Village music scene boom of the late 1970s, alongside artists like Steve Forbert and The Roches. Mas started the Songwriter's Workshop at the Cornelia Street Cafe in 1977, which later evolved into the Songwriter's Exchange, featuring notable singer-songwriters such as Jack Hardy and Suzanne Vega. Mas gained prominence with her energetic live shows from 1979 to 1981 while signed to Mercury Records. During this period, she released three albums: Carolyne Mas (1979), Hold On (1980), and Modern Dreams (1981). Her hit single "Sittin' in the Dark" from her album Mas Hysteria, released by Phonogram, marked her greatest success in Germany. She toured extensively with a band that included notable musicians like David Landau and Crispin Cioe. Mas moved to Bremen, Germany, in 1989, where she continued to tour and record, releasing albums such as Action Pact (1989), Live! (1992), and Reason Street (1993) under SPV GmbH. Mas returned to the United States in September 1993 and later reunited with producer-guitarist Steve Burgh to release Brand New World (2005).
