Biography
Carmen Dragon was an American conductor, composer, and arranger born on July 28, 1914, in Antioch, California. While attending Antioch High School, he composed the school song âForward, Antioch!â, which was first performed in February 1930. By 1935, Dragon had formed his own orchestra and began a prolific career in radio, film, and television. He achieved significant acclaim for his orchestral arrangements, particularly his version of âAmerica the Beautifulâ, and conducted the Hollywood Bowl Symphony Orchestra for The Standard School Broadcast. In the film industry, he composed scores for numerous productions, including Night into Morning, At Gunpoint, and Invasion of the Body Snatchers. In 1944, Dragon shared an Academy Award for Best Original Score with Morris Stoloff for the musical Cover Girl. He later won an Emmy Award in 1964 for his work on a televised Christmas special. Dragon died of cancer on March 28, 1984, in Santa Monica. His legacy was honored posthumously with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1989.
