Biography

The Pakistani alternative-rock group Call was formed in 1994 in Lahore, West Punjab. The group's original lineup included keyboardist Zulfiqar J. Khan, drummer Khurram J. Khan, guitarist Omer Pervaiz, and vocalist Danish J. Khan. After making their live debut in 1995, the bandmates spent several years performing together before briefly disbanding in October 2001. The following September, Call reformed with a new singer, Junaid Khan. This version of Call achieved commercial success with the chart-topping single "Nishaan," which reached Number 1 on the IM Top 10 chart in 2003. Another single, "Pukaar," also reached Number 1 that same year, followed by "Shayad" and "Sam Bhula" in 2005, "Bichar Kai Bhee" in 2006, and "Kuch Naheen" in 2007. All six singles also appeared on Call's debut album, Jilawatan, which was released in November 2005. Featuring a heavy, metal-influenced sound, Jilawatan was named "Best Album" at the Lux Style Awards. Equally successful was Call's second album, Dhoom, which appeared in 2011 and was named "Best Album" by the Lux Style Awards in 2012. Dhoom featured another pair of chart-topping singles, "Yeh Pal" (which appeared in the Bollywood movie Aasma: The Sky Is the Limit) and "Dharkay Jiya" (which appeared in Aloo Chaat), as well as the song "Ho Jaane De," which found the band incorporating pop influences. The album also featured a slimmed-down version of the band, whose roster now featured Junaid Khan on vocals, Zulfiqar J. Khan on guitar, and Sultan Raja on bass. Call continued releasing singles throughout the latter half of the decade, and "Laree Chootee" — another track from Dhoom — experienced a resurgence in popularity in 2023, when the song reached Number 31 on India's Top 200 Shazam chart.
