The California Raisins were a fictional rhythmâandâblues animated group created in 1986 by the advertising firm Foote, Cone & Belding for a SunâMaid commercial, featuring anthropomorphized raisins and lead vocals by Buddyâ¯Miles. The breakthrough came when the claymation commercial, produced by Vinton Studios, captured public attention and led to an Emmy Award for A Claymation Christmas Celebration in 1987. The group released four studio albums between 1987 and 1988, including The California Raisins (1987) and Sweet, Delicious, & Marvelous (1988), and achieved a Billboard Hotâ¯100 peak of number 84 with the single "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" in 1988. Subsequent releases such as Meet the Raisins! (1988) and Christmas with The California Raisins (1988) broadened their catalog, while the 1988 primetime special Meet the Raisins! earned a Primetime Emmy nomination. The franchise expanded into a Saturdayâmorning cartoon series, a 1990 sequel special The Raisins: Sold Out! and a 1991 NES video game, though the group disbanded in 1994 following the collapse of the California Raisin Advisory Board; the trademarks were later transferred to the state of California and licensed to the California Raisin Marketing Board. The California Raisins remain a notable example of advertisingâdriven pop culture, with their merchandise and media appearances continuing to be collected and referenced in contemporary retrospectives.
