Cabestan, a group of Breton musicians and singers, was founded in 1982 following an recording of traditional chants for an anthology by Le Chasse-marée. The lineup included notable members such as Bernard Subert on bombarde, clarinet, flute, and vocals; Benoît Chantran on violin and vocals; Michel Colleu on vielle, concertina, and vocals; Christian Desnos on accordéon diatonique and vocals; and Arnaud Maisonneuve on guitar, bouzouki, and vocals. Their debut album Chants de Marins Traditionnels was released in 1984. In 1990, they won the Grand Prix du disque from the Académie Charles Cros for their album Gwerz Penmarcâh (1990). The group continued to release albums, including Tempête pour sortir (1995) and Femmes de marins (1997).
