Biography
Buddy MacMaster, born Hugh Alan McMaster on October 18, 1924 in Timmins, Ontario, was a Canadian fiddler. Raised in a Gaelic-speaking home, MacMaster began playing the fiddle at an early age and had his first public performance at age 12. He made his professional debut at a square dance in Troy, Nova Scotia, at age 14. Throughout the 1940s and 1950s, he played nights at square dances across Nova Scotia while working for the Canadian National Railway. In 1988, MacMaster retired from the railroad to focus on music full-time, touring internationally and recording several albums including Judique on the Floor (1989) and The Judique Flyer (2000). He received an honorary doctorate from St. Francis Xavier University in 1995 and was awarded the Order of Canada in 2000 for his contributions to Canadian culture. MacMaster died at his home in Judique, Nova Scotia on August 20, 2014.
