Box Car Racer was formed in 2001 in San Diego, California, by Blinkâ182 guitarist and vocalist Tom DeLonge and drummer Travis Barker, with guitarist David Kennedy and bassist Anthony Celestino joining later. The project emerged as a sideâproject during a Blinkâ182 break, allowing DeLonge to explore darker songwriting that did not fit Blinkâ182âs popâpunk style. In May 2002 the band released its selfâtitled debut album Box Car Racer under MCA Records; the record entered the Billboard 200 at number 12 and produced singles such as "I Feel So" and "There Is", the former reaching number 8 on the Modern Rock Tracks chart. The group embarked on a North American headlining tour in fall 2002 with The Used as support, and performed their final show in Detroit on 17â¯December 2002. DeLonge concluded the project in midâ2003, citing its purpose as fulfilled, and the band effectively disbanded that year. The albumâs chart performance and the single "I Feel So" remain notable milestones, reflecting the projectâs impact on the early 2000s alternative rock scene.
