Biography
Bobby Matos was an American Latin jazz percussionist born on July 24, 1941 in the Bronx, New York. He began playing music by hitting pots and pans in his grandmother's apartment. As a youth, he studied conga drums with Patato Valdez and Mongo SantamarÃa. Matos was also encouraged to play timbales by musicians Willie Bobo and Tito Puente. In the late 1960s, he recorded the album My Latin Soul for Phillips International Records, which established his reputation as a bandleader. Throughout his career, Matos toured and recorded with artists including Ben Vereen, Bette Midler and Miriam Makeba. His recording history included five critically acclaimed albums released through Ubiquity Records. One of his final records was the album Gratitude, issued on the LifeForce jazz label. Matos died of cancer in 2017 in Los Angeles.
