Biography

Robert Hamilton “Bob” Kindred (May 11, 1940 – August 15, 2016) was an American jazz tenor saxophonist, composer, and educator. Born in Lansing, Michigan, he grew up in the Philadelphia suburbs and initially studied clarinet before mastered the alto saxophone in the Philadelphia Youth Jazz Band under James DePreist. At 17, Kindred joined the Pennsylvania Sixpence, touring Europe with a swing and Dixieland repertoire. After a brief career in business, he returned to music to study modern jazz under Phil Woods. Kindred toured with soul jazz artists including Groove Holmes, Charles Earland, and Jimmy McGriff. In 1975, he joined the Glenn Miller ghost band and performed as a soloist with Woody Herman at Carnegie Hall. His notable albums include Nights of Boleros and Blues (2006) and Blue Moon (2010). Alongside his wife, Anne Phillips, he wrote Bending Towards the Light – A Jazz Nativity. Kindred died in Nashville in 2016.
