Bonnie Tyler (born Gaynor Hopkins on â¯June 8, 1951, in Skewen, Neath, Wales) began singing while working as a flight attendant and later joined the touring group of Johnnie Walker as a backing vocalist. Her breakthrough came with the 1977 single "It's a Heartache", which entered the UK charts and established her as a potent rock vocalist. Bonnie Tyler signed with the London label EMI, releasing her debut album The World Starts Tonight in 1977, followed by Natural Force (1978) and the UKâchartâclimbing "Totalâ¯Eclipseâ¯ofâ¯theâ¯Heart" from Diamond Cut (1979). The early 1980s saw the hit singles "You'reâ¯aâ¯Woman" and "Holdingâ¯Outâ¯forâ¯aâ¯Hero" from Goodbyeâ¯toâ¯theâ¯Island (1981) and Hideâ¯Yourâ¯Heart (1988). Bonnie Tylerâs 1983 album Fasterâ¯Thanâ¯theâ¯Speedâ¯ofâ¯Night produced the global smash "Theâ¯Best" and cemented her presence on international charts. Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, Bonnie Tyler continued to release albums such as Angelâ¯Heart (1992), Silhouetteâ¯inâ¯Red (1993), and Freeâ¯Spirit (1995), and Bonnie Tyler toured extensively across Europe and North America. Bonnie Tylerâs later work, including Simplyâ¯Believe (2004) and Theâ¯Bestâ¯Isâ¯Yetâ¯toâ¯Come (2021), reflected a mature sound while retaining her signature husky vocal style. Bonnie Tyler passed away on July 8, 2026, in Faro, Portugal, leaving a legacy of chartâtopping rock hits and a distinct vocal presence that resonated across generations.
