Biography

The Blue Stingrays were a late 1990s rock band from the United States that played surf rock with some country and western elements, giving an overall Hawaiian atmosphere. The band was composed of members of Tom Petty's group The Heartbreakers. During a short break from their work with Petty, they recorded their sole album Surf-n-Burn, released in 1997 by Epitone Records. The album featured a cover of the James Bond theme song "Goldfinger" and included liner notes presenting a fictional history of the band as a legendary instrumental group founded in the late 1950s. The Blue Stingrays' lineup included Mike Campbell on guitar, Ron Blair on bass, and Randall Marsh on drums. The album marked a reunion of sorts, with founding bassist Ron Blair playing with Heartbreakers members for the first time in 15 years, and Marsh, who had previously played in an earlier Heartbreakers incarnation called Mudcrutch.
