Biography
Bloodrock, a hard rock band from Fort Worth, Texas, emerged in 1963 under the name The Naturals. The initial lineup included Jim Rutledge on drums and vocals, Nick Taylor on guitar and vocals, Ed Grundy on bass and vocals, and Dean Parks on guitar. Their first single "Hey Girl" b/w "I Want You" was released in 1965. By 1966, they changed their name to Crowd + 1 and signed with Capitol Records, releasing several singles. In 1969, the band transformed into Bloodrock, named by Terry Knight who also produced their debut album Bloodrock. Jim Rutledge moved from drums to lead vocals, and Rick Cobb joined on drums for the next four albums, including Bloodrock 2 (1970), which peaked at Number 21 on the Billboard Pop Album Chart, and "D.O.A." (1970-1971), reaching Number 36 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Personnel changes followed, with Warren Ham replacing Jim Rutledge on vocals and Lee Pickens on guitar, leading to a stylistic shift towards progressive rock. The album Passage peaked at Number 104 in 1972, but declining popularity led to Capitol rejecting their final album, Whirlwinnd Tongues. Bloodrock disbanded after their last gig in April 1974.
