Biography

Although Spooky Tooth only recorded a handful of albums during their career, the band left a lasting impression on the UK rock business. They were an archetypal UK band, so much so they were featured in the 1970 music business documentary 'Groupies'. The band's career was marred by break-ups, managerial issues and frequent personnel changes, all of which conspired to restrict their success. The group began life as Art, a Carlisle-based band who had come to the attention of Island's Chris Blackwell and recorded an album with the label. With the encouragement of Blackwell, the band joined forces with American keyboard player and vocalist Gary Wright and Spooky Tooth were born. The defining Spooky Tooth line-up lasted a brief three years during which time the partnership created by Wright and Mike Harrison, both of whom were talented vocalists and keyboard players, defined the band's sound. Wright left the band in 1970 (he rejoined at various times later in the band's career) and had a major hit with the single 'Dream Weaver'. Other notable Spooky Tooth members who went on to have successful careers include Mike Patto (Boxer), Luther Grosvenor (Mott the Hoople, Stealers Wheel), Henry McCullough (Wings) and Mick Jones (Foreigner).
