Biography

William Russell Watrous III, born on June 8, 1939 in Middletown, Connecticut, was an American jazz trombonist. Introduced to the instrument by his father at a young age, Watrous began his professional career performing with Billy Butterfield's band after studying with jazz pianist Herbie Nichols while serving in the U.S. Navy. His career flourished in the 1960s, playing and recording with prominent musicians such as Count Basie, Maynard Ferguson, Woody Herman, Quincy Jones, and Johnny Richards. He released his debut album In Love Again in 1968. In the 1970s, he formed the Manhattan Wildlife Refuge Big Band, which recorded two albums for Columbia Records. Other notable releases include A Time for Love from the 1993 album of the same name and The Tiger of San Pedro, which earned him a Grammy nomination in 1975. Watrous died on July 2, 2018, in Los Angeles.
