Biography

Beulah, an American indie rock band from San Francisco, California, was formed in 1996 by Miles Kurosky and Bill Swan. The duo began recording songs every six weeks for 16 months on a tape recorder while working together at a post office. Their breakthrough came when Robert Schneider of The Apples in Stereo expressed interest in their work, leading to the release of their first single "A Small Cattle Drive in a Snow Storm" in 1997 and their debut album Handsome Western States in the same year through Elephant 6 Records. The band gained recognition for their unique sound and extensive use of instruments, releasing critically acclaimed albums such as When Your Heartstrings Break (1999) and The Coast is Never Clear (2001). Their album, Yoko, was released in 2003. The band disbanded shortly after due to personal tensions. In late 2009, the band reunited to perform selections from The Desert of Shallow Effects at The Bay Bridged festival, and their song “Popular Mechanics for Lovers” was later featured in the 2009 film Youth in Revolt and its soundtrack album.
