Biography

Benjamin Eidson, known professionally as Benny Joy, was born on November 5, 1935, in Atlanta, Georgia. He moved to Tampa Bay, Florida, where he learned to play guitar from his neighbors and began performing locally. His breakthrough came when Daz Dodds signed him to TRI-DEC Records, resulting in the release of "Spin the Bottle" in 1957, which gained regional success. In 1958, he switched to Ram Records and released "Ittie Bittie Everything" before touring Europe supporting acts like The Platters. His final single, "Crash the Party", was issued on Decca Records in 1959. After failing to achieve a major breakthrough, Joy worked as a disc jockey and songwriter for artists such as Marty Robbins and Jackie Wilson. His recordings saw renewed interest during England's rockabilly revival and were featured on compilations like Crash the Rockabilly Party and The Benny Joy Story 1957–61. He died on October 28, 1988.
