Biography

Ben Goldberg (born August 8, 1959) is an American jazz, free jazz, and klezmer clarinetist and composer from Denver, Colorado. He studied at the University of California, Santa Cruz and earned a Master of Arts in composition from Mills College. In the 1990s, Goldberg performed in the New Klezmer Trio with Dan Seamans and Kenny Wollesen, releasing the albums Masks and Faces (1991) and Melt Zonk Rewire (1995). Goldberg is the founder of the BAG Production label. His discography as a leader includes The Relative Value of Things (1993), Junk Genius (1995), and What Comes Before (1998). He collaborated with John Zorn on Baal: Book of Angels Volume 15 (2010) and with Joshua Redman on Subatomic Particle Homesick Blues (2013). In 2011, the Down Beat Critic's Poll named Goldberg the Number 1 Rising Star Clarinetist. His later recordings include Orphic Machine (2015) and Good Day for Cloud Fishing (2019).
