Barbara Diane Martin Richardson (June 16, 1943 â March 4, 2020) was an American R&B and pop singer from Detroit. Martin joined the group The Primettes in 1960. Alongside Florence Ballard, Mary Wilson, and Diana Ross, Martin signed with Motown Records on January 15, 1961, as a member of The Supremes. Martin performed as a studio backing vocalist for Motown artists and recorded early singles for the ensemble. Martin provided shared lead vocals on the song â(Heâs) Seventeenâ. In October 1961, Martin became pregnant and left the group in the spring of 1962. Martin performed on the majority of tracks for the debut album Meet the Supremes (1962), though Martin did not appear on the cover art. Following the music career, Martin earned a degree in psychology and worked in mental health. Martin died in Detroit on March 4, 2020.
