Biography

Banda Cuisillos is a Mexican banda group from Cuisillos, Jalisco, formed in 1987 by clarinetist Arturo Macías and long associated with a large brass-heavy lineup, romantic banda songs, charangas, cumbias, and Native American-inspired stage costumes. After early local work, the group made its recording debut with Tengo Mi Novia en Cuisillos in 1989 and reached a wider audience in the 1990s with El Perro Aguayo, Las Mil y Una Noches, and Déjate Llevar, whose songs helped define their mix of danceable banda and sentimental ballads. The group continued with albums such as Te Amo in 1997, Acuérdate de Mí in 1998, A Veces Lloro and Hasta la Eternidad in 1999, and Mil Heridas in 2000, building a catalog around tracks including “Ya No Me Mires Así,” “A Veces Lloro,” “No Se Lo Digas a Ella,” and “Mil Heridas.” Their 2001 album Puras Rancheras con Cuisillos won the Latin Grammy for Best Banda Album in 2002, followed by further Grammy and Latin Grammy nominations across the 2000s and 2010s. Later releases included Corazón, Caricias Compradas, Vive y Déjame Vivir, 2012: Fin y Principio de una Era, Dos Botellas, and the 2022 live album Banda Cuisillos en Vivo Desde el Auditorio Telmex. After the death of vocalist Francisco Ernesto Ruiz Martínez in 2017, Banda Cuisillos continued touring and recording, later adding Miguel Ángel Chávez and Gabriel Amezcua as vocalists alongside Rogelio Torres in 2024. Subsequent singles include “Sigue Siendo El Rey,” “En La Frente,” “A Como Yo Lo Veo,” and “Vamos a Platicar,” released in 2026.
