Banana Slug String Band, an American children's band formed in 1985, originated from Santa Cruz, California. The group, consisting of Doug "Dirt" Greenfield, Larry Graff, Steve Van Zandt, and Mark Nolan, began performing music together at a nature camp in the Santa Cruz Mountains, where they were teachers. Their initial performances involved singing songs related to what students had learned during their camp activities. In 1989, Banana Slug String Band released their debut album Adventures on the Air Cycle, followed by Dirt Made My Lunch (1989) and Penguin Parade (1996). The band was also known for their live performances, often playing 150 shows a year, including appearances at notable festivals like the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival and High Sierra Music Festival.
