Biography

Aztec Two-Step is an American folk-rock ensemble formed in 1971 in Boston. Rex Fowler and Neal Shulman met at a coffee house and named the group after a line in a poem by Lawrence Ferlinghetti. The duo signed with Elektra Records and released its self-titled debut studio album, Aztec Two-Step, in 1972. Between 1975 and 1977, the band released three albums with RCA Records, including Second Step and Adjoining Suites. The ensemble received the New York Music Award for Best Folk Album in 1986 for Living in America. The group appeared on television programs such as Late Night with David Letterman. In 1999, the documentary No-Hit Wonder aired on PBS. The band's later discography included the studio recordings Days of Horses (2004) and Naked (2017). Shulman retired in 2017. Fowler subsequently resumed touring with new members under the name Aztec Two-Step 2.0.
