Biography

Avery Sunshine (sometimes stylized as Avery*Sunshine) is an American R&B and soul singer from Chester, Pennsylvania. Born Denise Nicole White on May 22, 1975, she began playing piano at the age of 8 and quickly branched out into other genres such as gospel, classical music, and jazz. While still studying at Spelman College in Atlanta, she formed the R&B duo DaisyRew with Maia Nkenge Wilson and later adopted the moniker AverySunshine after meeting guitarist and producer Dana Johnson at the St. Paul AME Church. Their first collaboration was the neo-soul-tinged single "Stalker," which became a hit in Japan in 2005. Released independently in 2010, her self-titled studio debut garnered praise from critics and featured cameos by Takana Miyamoto, Roy Ayers, and Christian McBride. During this time, AverySunshine also worked as a choral director and served as a session musician for the likes of Tyler Perry and Jennifer Holliday. The SunRoom, her first release for Shanachie Entertainment, appeared in 2014 and was followed by Twenty Six Four in 2017. Preceded by the Top 30 R&B hit "Lucky," her highly anticipated LP Four Songs & a Bootleg finally hit retail in 2022.
